So this is another religion – Old Believers or Old Ritualists – which split from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century. They protested against church reforms. So very much like the protestants and the schism with Catholicism.

The Old believers were persecuted, so many moved from Russia to southeast Estonia where they have adhered to their traditional way of life. Many Old believers live on the shores of Lake Peipsi.

As of today there are eleven congregations of Old Believers in Estonia.

They are known for their love of onions. They grow a lot of these.  They believe that eating lots of onions ward of various ills.

We saw a home of old believers in the Estonia’s open-air museum. Here’s the link to my blog entry “Peasant life in Estonia.”
